Donor selection and genetic compatibility testing to achieve the birth of a healthy baby

Donor selection and genetic compatibility_

When a couple initiates an egg donation treatment, they have numerous doubts about the different stages of the process, including selecting the ideal donor. Physical appearance is one of the common concerns. However, genetics is undoubtedly the most important factor for prospective parents.

Taking this into account, Ovobank has a team that specializes in phenotypic and genetic matching to select the ideal donor and increase the chances of achieving a successful outcome: a healthy baby.

Ovodonation is an assisted reproduction treatment that follows the same procedure as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the laboratory. However, in this case, the union of the egg and the sperm is performed with an open-identity donor’s egg from Ovobank.

DONOR SELECTION AT OVOBANK

Ovobank donors are women between the ages of 18 and 34, who are in good health and undergo rigorous and comprehensive gynecological, serological and psychological examinations. To ensure a high success rate, the exclusion criteria are very strict, meaning that only one third of potential donors are selected.

At Ovobank, potential candidates who participate in the donation program are subject to a rigorous screening and selection process:

Initial evaluation:
All our donors undergo an initial evaluation consisting of an interview to determine if there are any possible psychopathologies. Their family and personal history is also analyzed to rule out any transmissible or hereditary diseases.

Medical tests:
Our donors undergo a thorough medical evaluation carried out by the gynecology unit, consisting of the following studies: a full medical-gynecological examination, in addition to blood and serological tests.

Blood tests:
Blood tests are one of the most important steps in the process. Based on the results, we are able to determine anatomic pathologies; hematological, biochemical and coagulation analyses; serological tests and genetic studies, etc.

Psychological studies:
Thanks to an exhaustive personal interview and various psychological tests, the presence of psychiatric and psychological disorders or inappropriate habits can be ruled out.

GENETIC STUDIES TO ACHIEVE THE BIRTH OF A HEALTHY BABY

Following our strict donor selection protocol, since 2016, we have been offering all the clinics and patients the possibility to go one step further in the genetic study, to perform the Genetic Compatibility Test between the donor and the patient’s partner so as to minimize the risk of transmission of hereditary genetic diseases.

Genetic Compatibility Test (GCT)

As shown in the infographic above, a simple blood test carried out on the donor and on the recipient’s male partner can confirm if they share the same genetic mutation, and consequently, whether they are compatible or not. Genetic Compatibility Testing (GCT) minimizes the transmission of genetic diseases to future children.

Furthermore, thanks to these tests, we are able to exclude candidates carrying any of the autosomal recessive mutations from the egg donation program; mutations studied in the egg donation program panel, corresponding to the following diseases:

  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy
  • Alpha Thalassemia
  • Beta Thalassemia
  • X-linked disorders (Fragile X syndrome or G6PD, among others)

Non-syndromic deafness (donors studied from October 1st 2019, following the recommendations of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF).

Ovobank donors have been screened on an exome basis, which allows the possibility of “universal matching” (matching by genetic analysis with one of the various gene panels available on the market).

Patients who request this study will be able to receive treatment with a greater sense of security and confidence, allowing them to fulfill their long-awaited dream of starting a family.
